We’re delighted to introduce the Summer Stillness Collection 2026, which includes a new addition to our samue clothing line, local art pieces, along with some tasteful accents and other imports from Japan.

At the heart of this year’s collection is our new Lightweight Cotton Samue. Made here in Seattle from soft, micro-sanded cotton twill, it reflects what we do best: create practical, modern meditation clothing rooted in tradition.

We’re especially pleased to continue our collaboration with Vashon Island artist Alex Echevarria, the creator behind several pieces of art offered by Still Sitting. His new handmade Wabi-Sabi Darumas bring the same warmth, humor and spirit found in his Wabi-Sabi Jizo statues and Beach Brick Darumas.

We’ve also curated a small selection of accents for your home, meditation space, and daily routine. You’ll find a Meditating Buddha Statue, traditional Japanese Tea Towels and Tenugui Wall Hangings. Some are directly connected to meditation practice; others simply bring a moment of pleasure or quiet attention into everyday life.

Lightweight Cotton Samue

The centerpiece of our Summer Stillness Collection is the newest addition to our line of meditation clothing: the Lightweight Cotton Samue.

Traditionally worn by Buddhist monks and nuns in Japan for work and daily activities, samue have long been valued for their comfort, simplicity and freedom of movement. Our new version is made from 5-ounce French twill cotton, making it the airiest option in the Still Sitting samue line. The fabric is micro-sanded for an exceptionally soft, almost silky feel from the first wear.

Designed for warm climates, summer retreats and hot days in the meditation hall, the Lightweight Cotton Samue offers a relaxed fit without unnecessary weight. Its clean black design is equally at home in a formal zendo, around town or during light work in the garden.

The jacket closes with traditional ties and includes a zippered front pocket. The pants feature roomy front pockets, a zippered fly, an elastic-and-drawstring waist and adjustable ankle cuffs. Like all our samue, it is preshrunk, machine washable and made here in Seattle.

The Lightweight Cotton Samue is available as a complete set or as separate jacket and pants.

We make our Lightweight Samue from 5 oz French twill micro-sanded cotton. Samue (or Samu-e or Samu-gi) is traditionally the work jacket for a Buddhist monk or nun in Japan.

Wabi-Sabi Darumas

We’re particularly excited to share these new Daruma statues from Alex Echevarria of Wabi-Sabi Studios on Vashon Island.

Alex is the local artist behind several familiar Still Sitting pieces, including our Wabi-Sabi Jizo Statues and Beach Brick Darumas. His work is intuitive, playful and rooted in the Japanese idea of wabi-sabi: an appreciation for imperfection, irregularity and the beauty created by time and weather.

Each of these new Darumas is cast in cement and finished by hand, giving it an individual personality rather than the uniform appearance of a mass-produced object. Available in two distinct styles — one taller and more upright, the other shorter and wider — they feel sturdy, whimsical and full of character.

Daruma is the Japanese name for Bodhidharma, the legendary teacher traditionally credited with bringing Chan Buddhism, the precursor to Zen, from India to China. In Japanese culture, the round figure of Daruma has become a beloved symbol of perseverance, resilience and good fortune.

These weather-resistant statues can live indoors on a shelf, altar or desk, or outside in a garden or sheltered porch. Their finishes may soften naturally with exposure, adding another layer of wabi-sabi character to each piece.

Meditating Buddha Statue

Quiet and contemplative, our new Meditating Buddha Statue depicts the Buddha seated on a lotus pedestal with his hands resting in his lap.

This gesture is known as the dhyana mudra, or meditation gesture. It represents deep concentration and the stillness of a mind that has fully settled. The Buddha’s lowered eyes and peaceful expression invite that same quality of attention in the viewer.

The statue is cold-cast in bronze, a process that combines genuine bronze powder with resin to capture the warmth and fine detail of traditional metalwork at a more accessible price. Subtle highlights emerge through the folds of the robe, while the carefully rendered hair, face and lotus base give the piece a quietly substantial presence.

At just under 10 inches tall, the Meditating Buddha is large enough to anchor an altar or meditation space without overwhelming it. It is also well suited to a desk, shelf or contemplative corner of the home.

Daruma Bell Charm

Small enough to travel anywhere, the Daruma Bell Charm brings a playful symbol of perseverance and good fortune to your keys, bag, car or phone strap.

The glossy red-and-cream charm features the unmistakable expression of a traditional Daruma, complete with bold eyebrows, mustache and gold accents. Inside is a small bell called a suikinsuzu, which creates a light jingle as the charm moves.

Finished with a braided red cord and gold clasp, it is a cheerful little reminder of the spirit associated with Daruma: keep going, begin again and rise after every setback.

Ripple Wind Chime

Our new Ripple Wind Chime comes from Oigen Foundry, a family-run Japanese ironworks founded in 1852 in Mizusawa, Iwate Prefecture.

The region is renowned for Nambu Tekki, or Southern Ironware, a centuries-old cast-iron tradition known for its durability and craftsmanship. Hand-cast in solid iron, the bell features a tiered surface pattern called hamon, meaning “wave pattern” or “ripple.”

Its sculptural, beehive-like shape and deep matte-black finish give the chime a striking presence even when it is still. Hung near a window, doorway, porch or tree branch, it moves gently in the breeze and produces a soft, resonant sound.

It is a simple object shaped by generations of craftsmanship — made to be heard, but also worth pausing to look at.

Japanese Tea Towels

Lightweight, absorbent and quick to dry, our new Japanese Tea Towels are designed for everyday usefulness.

Woven in cotton with a smooth, printed surface on one side and a light terry texture on the other, they’re absorbent without being bulky and dry quickly between uses. Traditionally used in Japan as hand towels, face cloths, travel towels, or utility cloths, they’re valued for their versatility and ease of care. We think these make a great gift.

The collection includes five designs inspired by Japanese art and culture:

• Great Wave: A deep-blue wave motif inspired by Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa.
• Cherry Blossom: Cascading pink, red and white sakura blossoms.
• Crane & Fuji: Cranes flying over Mount Fuji and a rising sun.
• Mt. Fuji: A minimalist indigo rendering of the mountain marked with its 3,776-meter elevation.
• Sumo Yoga: A playful, generously sized illustration of sumo wrestlers performing yoga poses.

All towels are made in Japan from 100% cotton. These towels are practical enough for daily use and also make for a thoughtful gift.

Tenugui Wall Hangings

Our new Tenugui Wall Hangings offer a simple way to bring Japanese imagery, season and color into a meditation space or quiet corner.

A tenugui is a slim panel of stencil-dyed cotton traditionally used as a towel, headscarf or wrapping cloth. Its designs have also long been appreciated as artwork. Hung vertically, the lightweight fabric becomes softly translucent, creating the presence of a scroll without its formality or weight.

Choose from three designs:

• Hokkori Jizo: A gently smiling Jizo beneath a straw hat, accompanied by two small birds and misty pines.
• Daruma: Four bold cream-colored Daruma faces set against deep black.
• Hasunohana (Lotus): A vivid pond of lotus flowers and lily pads in shades of blue, green and pink.

Each cloth is hand-dyed on 100% cotton and bears the artist’s signature and seal. The unfinished top and bottom edges are traditional rather than accidental, preserving the authentic character and versatility of the tenugui.

An optional reusable wooden hanger makes each cloth easy to display without clips or sewing. Designs can be swapped in minutes, allowing the artwork to change with the season, the room or your mood.

New Color Variations

Koyo Zafu – Pine

Our Koyo Zafu is now available in Pine, a new color offering alongside our existing options of Black and Walnut.

The Koyo Zafu is a wide, low-profile zafu for those who prefer sitting close to the ground.  Inspired by the elegance of the broad leaf, the Koyo Zafu (広葉) is designed to offer spacious comfort and support during meditation.

Temple Bell Wind Chime – Black

The Temple Bell Wind Chime is now available in an elegant black color.

The wind chime features a classic form reminiscent of the Bonsho Buddhist Temple Bell used in Zen Buddhist temples. Hanging from a slender, sturdy cord, the bell sways gently in the breeze, producing a soft, melodic chime. The movement of the wind brings forth a peaceful, lingering sound that invites contemplation and relaxation.
