Our Everyday Samue is a stylish and will last a lifetime. Samue (or Samu-e or Samu-gi) is traditionally the work jacket for a Buddhist monk or nun in Japan. And it looks great on anyone. Wear it to the meditation hall, the dojo, around town or working in the garden.

We tailor this collection from comfortable 6.5 oz tight-weaved cotton twill. The samue jacket closes with ties and you’ll find it has a zippered outside pocket and a hidden inside pocket. Our samue is pre-shrunk, so it’s machine washable, with maximum shrinkage 3-5%.  And like all of our clothing, it’s made right here in Seattle.

FAQs – Everyday Samue

What fabric is the Everyday Samue made from?

The Everyday Samue is made from 6.5 oz tight-weave cotton twill — a durable, comfortable fabric that’s lighter than our Medium Weight but still substantial.  It softens with washing while holding its color and structure well. It wears beautifully after years of regular use.

What pockets does it have?

The jacket has a zippered outside pocket.  The pants have a zippered fly, an elastic and drawstring waist, and front pockets.  Note that items like keys or phones may shift in the pockets when sitting.

Can I wear it for work practice as well as sitting?

Yes — this is one of the more versatile samue in our line. The cotton twill holds up well to regular wear and light work, and customers use it for everything from zazen to gardening to around-the-house daily wear. For heavy outdoor work over time, the Medium Weight will be more durable.

How do the ankle cuffs work?

The pants close at the ankle with Velcro tabs rather than elastic — it allows you to adjust the fit without any binding around the ankle. Note that the cuffs are designed to fasten at the ankle only and can’t be secured higher up the leg.

How does sizing run, and how should I choose my size?

Our samue run large — most customers find sizing down one from their usual size gives the best fit, particularly in the pants waist. If you’re between sizes, go smaller. Our size chart gives height and waist guidance. The samue is pre-shrunk to 3–5% maximum shrinkage.

Is it suitable for formal zendo use?

Yes. The clean, minimal design in black works well in a formal practice setting. Several customers wear it as their primary sitting garment when not in robes.
