Description
Our Lightweight Samue is the airiest option in our samue line — made from 5 oz cotton twill, it’s designed for warm climates, hot summer sitting, or anyone who wants the lightest possible feel while still getting our long-lasting samue construction. The fabric is micro-sanded for a notably soft hand straight off the shelf – it silky soft to the touch. Samue (or Samu-e or Samu-gi) is traditionally the work jacket for a Buddhist monk or nun in Japan, and it looks great on anyone. Wear it to the meditation hall, the dojo, around town, or working in the garden.
The jacket closes with ties and has a zippered front pocket. The pants have a zippered fly, roomy front pockets, an elastic and drawstring waist, and velcro ankle cuffs. Like all our samue, the fit is roomy and relaxed. Our samue is pre-shrunk and machine washable, with maximum shrinkage of 3–5%. And like all
of our clothing, it’s made right here in Seattle. The Lightweight Samue is currently available in black, with jacket, pants, and full set options.

FAQs – Lightweight Samue
What fabric is the Lightweight Samue made from?
It’s made from 5 oz French twill micro-sanded cotton — the most breathable fabric in our samue line, though not dramatically lighter than our Kyoto Collection (5.37 oz) or Linen Collection (5.5 oz). The micro-sanded finish gives it a soft hand. It’s a good choice for hot climates, summer practice, or anyone who wants the airiest possible feel.
How does it compare to your other lighter-weight samue?
The Lightweight, Kyoto Collection, and Linen Collection are all close in weight and all well suited to warm-weather wear. The differences come down to fabric character: the Lightweight is a simple cotton twill in black only, the Kyoto Collection offers refined imported Japanese fabric in several patterns, and
the Linen Collection offers natural linen with its own breathability and drape. The Everyday Samue, at 6.5 oz, is the next step up in warmth.
What colors are available?
The Lightweight Samue is currently available in black only.
What pockets does it have?
The jacket has a zippered front pocket and closes with ties. The pants have a zippered fly, an elastic and
drawstring waist, and velcro ankle cuffs.
Is it suitable for formal zendo use?
Yes. The clean, minimal black design works well in a formal practice setting, and the construction
matches our other samue in quality and fit.
How does sizing run?
Like all our samue, it runs large — most customers find sizing down one gives the best fit. Check our size
chart for height and waist guidance.
Is it durable enough for work practice?
Being our lightest fabric, it’s best suited to indoor meditation, warm-weather wear, and lighter activity rather than heavy outdoor work. For demanding work practice, our Medium Weight or Indigo Denim samue will hold up better over time.
Is it available as jacket, pants, or a full set?
Yes, all three options are available.
