Sitting during the summer months or living in a warm climate has its own practical challenges: a hot zendo or meditation room can be easily distracting and turn a deep meditation session into a challenge.
What you wear won’t settle your thoughts for you, but it can make getting comfortable a little easier. Although we don’t deal with stifling hot days that often here in the Pacific Northwest, we know practitioners who have been asking for a lighter samue.
We are happy to introduce our Lightweight Samue, a soft cotton option that is our airiest garment yet, and perfect for practitioners who need to beat the heat.
Made in Seattle from 5-ounce French twill cotton, this samue has a relaxed fit and a micro-sanded finish that feels soft from the start. It is available in black as a jacket, pants, or a complete set.
Here we will give you a closer look at the Lightweight Samue, how it fits into our samue clothing collection, and the practical tradition behind its design.

The Lightweight Samue: Our Coolest Garment Yet
The Lightweight Samue uses the lowest fabric weight in our current samue collection, making it our lightest option for summer practice.
Its cotton twill has a diagonal weave, while micro-sanding gently finishes the surface to create a softer feel. Here, “coolest” describes its place in our samue collection (but it’s also pretty cool by 90’s parlance as well). Think of it as a lighter choice for warm days or more activity.
The jacket closes with ties and has a zippered front pocket, while the pants have roomy front pockets, a zippered fly, and an elastic-and-drawstring waist. Adjustable hook-and-loop ankle cuffs let you change the opening at the hem. When trying on the pants, adjust the waist and cuffs before settling into your usual seated position. Check for pulling at the knees or pressure at the waist, then stand and bend to see how the fit feels in motion.
The fabric is preshrunk and machine washable, although the product page allows for 3%–5% additional shrinkage. If you are between sizes or buying for someone else, reach out and ask us for help before deciding.

How the Lightweight Samue Compares to other Garments in Our Samue Collection
The Lightweight Samue is a unique addition to our line of samue garments. By using 5 oz French twill micro-sanded cotton, it is the lightest weight of all our offerings.
The Kyoto Collection Samue uses 5.37-ounce cotton textiles from Japan, while the Linen Collection Samue uses 5.5-ounce European linen. Kyoto offers distinct patterned fabrics; linen brings a different texture and drape; the Lightweight offers soft cotton twill in plain black. If you are choosing among them, consider which fabric and appearance you prefer.
For a step up in fabric weight, the Everyday Samue uses 6.5-ounce cotton twill for general indoor and outdoor wear. This samue is our go-to here in Seattle (hence, the “Everyday” moniker), but for some, the Lightweight will be more desirable.
Our 8.5-ounce brushed-cotton Medium Weight Samue offers even more warmth for cooler conditions, while the 8-ounce Indigo Denim Samue provides a similarly rugged option. These choices may suit a different season or a day with more demanding work. A summer meditation outfit and clothing for a chilly morning outdoors do not necessarily need to be the same garment.
If you’re not sure which one is right for you, start by asking yourself where you will wear your samue most often: a heated room, a warm climate, outdoors, or a setting with changing temperatures. Then consider what you’ll be doing: meditation, gardening or outdoor work, relaxing around the house, or running errands.
Our guide to choosing the right samue offers a a more complete look at the fabrics across the collection.

What is a Samue?
A samue is traditional Japanese Zen work clothing, typically consisting of a jacket and trousers. The name means “clothing for samu,” referring to the work practice that helps sustain a monastic community.
Cooking, cleaning, gardening, and gathering firewood are examples of duties associated with this tradition. Its practical design reflects the need for clothing that accommodates physical work and everyday movement.
Samue are designed to be dynamic, practical, and comfortable. They are useful as meditation clothing, but other activities as well: preparing meals, cleaning, and outdoor work.
Over time, samue have also found uses beyond monastic work and meditation as both casual and lounge wear.
Our Lightweight Samue combines tradition with practicality as contemporary clothing through its relaxed shape, adjustable fit, and variety of styles. You might wear the set for morning meditation, pair the jacket with your usual pants, or keep the trousers for comfortable afternoons at home.
The choice is yours in how you style, wear, and practice with your samue.
