FAQs – Meditation Cushion Sets

What is included in a meditation cushion set?
Each set includes a zafu (round meditation cushion) and a zabuton (flat base cushion). Together, they provide a complete and comfortable seat for meditation practice .

Why use both a zafu and a zabuton?
The zafu raises your hips to support posture, while the zabuton cushions your knees, ankles, and legs. Used together, they create a stable, balanced sitting position that’s much more comfortable than sitting on the floor alone.

Is a cushion set a good place to start for beginners?
Yes. A cushion set is often the simplest and most effective way to begin. It gives you everything you need to establish a comfortable, sustainable meditation practice from the start.

What is the difference between kapok and buckwheat filling?

  • Buckwheat hulls: Firm, moldable, and conform to your body. Heavier and very stable.
  • Kapok: Lightweight, soft yet supportive, with a slightly springy feel.

Which filling should I choose?
Choose buckwheat if you want a cushion that molds closely to your body and stays in place. Choose kapok if you prefer a lighter cushion with a softer, more buoyant feel.

What size zabuton should I choose?

  • Medium (33” x 33”): Works well for most people
  • Large (36” x 33”): Better for taller practitioners (around 6’2″ and above) or those who want extra leg room
  • Thick versions: Offer additional cushioning for knees and ankles

What is the difference between Standard and Deluxe cushions?

  • Standard: Non-removable cover, spot clean
  • Deluxe: Removable, machine-washable cover with an inner liner
If you want easier cleaning and adjustability, Deluxe is a good choice.

Can I adjust the firmness of the zafu in the set?
Yes. All of our zafus allow you to add or remove filling, so you can fine-tune the height and firmness to your preference.

Are these cushions firm or soft?
They are designed to be supportive rather than soft like a pillow. This helps maintain posture during meditation while still being comfortable for longer sits.

How do I know if this set will be comfortable for me?
Most people find that using a proper zafu and zabuton makes sitting significantly more comfortable and stable, especially compared to improvised setups like pillows or folded blankets .

Are your meditation cushion sets made in the US?
Yes. All of our cushions are sewn and stuffed in the Pacific Northwest using durable cotton fabrics and careful construction.

How long will a cushion set last?
With their heavy-duty cotton duck fabric and double stitching, these cushions are designed for years of regular use.

Do I need anything else besides this set?
No. A zafu and zabuton set is everything you need to get started. Some people later add items like a meditation bench or extra cushions, but this set is a complete foundation.

Are the cushions portable?
Yes. Zafus include a carrying handle, and while the zabuton is larger, the set can be moved easily within your home or taken to a meditation group.

How do I choose between different cushion sets (colors or fabrics)?
Functionally, the sets are the same. The main difference is color and fabric style, so you can choose what best fits your space or personal taste.
