Description
Our Medium Weight Samue is a stylish and will last a lifetime. Samue (or Samu-e or Samu-gi) is traditionally the work jacket for a Buddhist monk or nun in Japan. And it looks great on anyone. Wear it to the meditation hall, the dojo, around town or working in the garden.
This is our medium weight 100% cotton samue, and comes in Black, Brown or Navy Blue.ย We use a soft brushed 8.5 oz cotton that is pre-shrunk, and will has a maximum shrinkage of 3-5%.
The fit is quite roomy. The samue closes with ties and youโll find it has a zippered outside pocket. Our samue is machine washable. And like all of our clothing, it’s made right here in Seattle. Whatever your line of work happens to be, we think you’ll love doing it in this samue set.
You’ll find more info on how to choose a samue jacket here.

FAQs โ Medium Weight Samue
What fabric is the Medium Weight Samue made from? It’s made from 8.5 oz brushed 100% cotton โ our most substantial fabric, slightly heavier than the Indigo Denim and noticeably warmer than the Everyday. The brushed finish gives it a soft hand that customers often describe as surprisingly comfortable for its weight. It’s pre-shrunk to a maximum of 3โ5% shrinkage and machine washable.
Is this warm enough for a cold zendo? Yes โ this is the samue we reach for on cold mornings in Seattle. Several customers specifically mention it for cool zendo sittings, outdoor practice, and work in colder weather.ย If you’re in a heated space year-round, the Everyday, Linen, or Kyoto Samue may serve you better.
How does it compare to the Everyday Samue? The Medium Weight is heavier, warmer, and slightly more structured. Some customers who own both find the Medium Weight breaks in better over time and holds up to more demanding use. The Everyday is the better choice for warmer weather or heated indoor spaces. Both are excellent for sitting practice.
Is it comfortable for long meditation sits? Yes. The roomy cut and soft brushed fabric make it well suited for extended sitting. The pants have a zippered fly, elastic and drawstring waist, and velcro ankle cuffs โ several customers specifically appreciate that the velcro lies flat when sitting, unlike ties which can dig in.
What pockets does it have? The jacket has a zippered outer pocket and closes with ties. The pants have a zippered fly, side pockets, and an elastic and drawstring waist.
How does sizing run? Like all our samue, the Medium Weight runs large โ most customers find sizing down one gives the best fit, particularly in the pants waist. The waist tends to run especially roomy, so if you’re between sizes, go smaller. Our size chart gives height and waist guidance, but actual measurements for chest, inseam, and waist min/max would be more helpful โ something we’re working on.
Can I wear it for outdoor work practice? Yes โ this is one of its strengths. The brushed cotton holds up well to regular wear and heavier use, and customers use it for everything from garden work to outdoor samu. Multiple customers report wearing it as daily clothing well beyond the meditation hall.
What colors are available? The Medium Weight Samue comes in Black, Brown, and Navy Blue โ all available as jacket, pants, or a full set.

Best samue Iโve found yet. Actually usable for work and practice. Comfortable, durable material. Elegantly made but clearly hard wearing. Even in Japan this type of samue are difficult to find. Lots of cheap flimsy synthetic fabric lounge wear marketed as samue all over the internet. Avoid these expensive trappings and buy from Still Sitting. Packaged with care, stitching is impeccable. Sizes run large, but this is mostly a concern with the pants, at my 34w 31inseam, I tried size โsmallโ – they fit perfect ๐
I am 5โ0 tall. Weight 108 , 79 yr old female (Soto zen priest)
I ordered / received extra small size samue jkt .
Iโll pass it along ,โฆ wonโt be returning it.
i could not wear it: Extremely heavy materialโฆ. And โ too bigโ for me.
It feels and looks like canvas โoutdoors โ wear.
This item was not at all what I expected. ( other than it was black).

This is the first samue I ever purchased. I loved it so much, I purchased a second one. One black, one indigo. I browsed the internet looking for a samue, but they all looked cheap and thin and low quality. Still Sitting has high quality merchandise and I have purchased several items from them already. I think the samue is thick but good quality thick. I live in south Texas where we have humid weather, but this samue fits well in any climate, I think. I purchased them in small fearing they would not fit. But they fit. I stand 5’6 and weigh 180 and the small size fit just fine. You won’t be sorry you purchased a samue me with them.
Great quality and service๐
