Zabutons
The zabuton forms the foundation of your meditation practice and your meditation space.
Zabutons are rectangular meditation cushions placed beneath your zafu cushion or bench. It cushions your knees, ankles, and feet while providing a soft, stable foundation for seated meditation. Paired with a zafu, these two cushions create a traditional meditation cushion set used in Zen centers and home practice spaces around the world.
We make ours in three sizes and two thicknesses—regular and thick—so you can find the right fit for your body and posture. You can buy them individually or as part of a meditation cushion set with a matching zafu.
All Still Sitting zabutons use 100% cotton fabric and cotton batting, offering natural softness and durability. Our Folding Zabuton is a compact option filled with foam for easy travel and storage. Every cushion is sewn locally in the Pacific Northwest and made entirely in the U.S. with thoughtful care and craftsmanship.

Zabuton Meditation Mat FAQ
1. What is a zabuton?
A zabuton is a rectangular meditation mat placed beneath a zafu cushion or meditation bench. It provides soft padding for your knees, ankles, and feet during sitting meditation, making long sessions more comfortable. The zabuton is an essential part of a complete meditation cushion set, especially in Zen and mindfulness practice.
2. How is a zabuton different from a zafu cushion?
A zafu cushion elevates the hips and supports your spine, while a zabuton mat cushions the lower body where it meets the floor. Think of the zabuton as the foundation—it distributes your weight evenly and protects joints from pressure, especially on hardwood or tile floors.
3. What are zabutons made of?
Our zabutons are made with 100% cotton fabric and cotton batting. The one exception being our folding zabuton, which uses a premium foam fill.
4. Do I need both a zafu and a zabuton?
While you can meditate on a zafu alone, using a zabuton mat beneath it greatly improves comfort and posture. The combination helps maintain alignment while reducing strain on knees and ankles, making it ideal for daily or extended meditation sessions. Together, they create a stable, traditional meditation seat.
5. Can a zabuton be used outside of meditation?
Yes. Many people use zabutons as floor cushions for yoga, tea ceremonies, and mindfulness practice.
