Meditation Cushions

Meditation cushions are at the heart of Still Sitting. While our store also offers meditation benches, Buddhist vestments, and meditation clothing, our handcrafted zafu cushions and zabutons remain the foundation of our business.

Each cushion is sewn and assembled by hand with care in the United States — locally in the Pacific Northwest. Our covers are made from durable 100% cotton, and fillings include natural kapok fiber, buckwheat hulls, cotton, or, on select models, dense foam. These materials are chosen to support posture, relieve pressure on the hips and knees, and provide comfort for both short and extended meditation sessions.

If you are new to meditation, a cushion set can make sitting more comfortable and sustainable. Experienced practitioners also appreciate how a zafu helps align the spine, while a zabuton protects the knees and ankles. For additional guidance, see the FAQ below. In-depth articles on topics like choosing the right zabuton or the difference between kapok and buckwheat in your zafu, may be found on our blog.

Frequently Asked Questions about Meditation Cushions

1. What is a meditation cushion used for?
A meditation cushion aids in correct posture during meditation by lifting the hips and aligning the spine. It makes meditation more comfortable by reducing strain on the back, knees, and ankles.

2. What is the difference between a zafu and a zabuton?
A zafu is a round meditation cushion that supports the hips and spine. A zabuton is a flat mat that sits under the zafu, cushioning the knees and ankles. Many people use them together as a meditation cushion set.

3. Which filling is better: buckwheat or kapok?
Buckwheat hulls are firm and grounding, providing stable support that conforms to your body. Kapok fiber is lighter and springier, offering a softer, more buoyant feel. The best choice depends on your comfort preference.

4. How do I choose the right meditation cushion?
Consider your body type, flexibility, and meditation style. Taller practitioners or those with tighter hips may prefer a higher cushion, while others may be comfortable with a standard or low profile. Adding a zabuton mat can further improve comfort for longer sits.

5. How do you clean a meditation cushion?
Cleaning and care depend on the style of cushion and fabric. Generally spot cleaning with water and a rag is sufficient. For specific product cleaning instructions visit our care instructions page.
