Lay Robes
Our Zazen lay robes are designed and sewn in-house in the Pacific Northwest and can be purchased as a complete robe set or as individual pieces. Each set includes a kimono, hakama, and an optional collar, modeled on the informal robes traditionally worn by Japanese Zen monks and nuns. These robes provide simple, functional clothing for meditation practice and ceremonial events.
Lay robes come in two main pieces. The hakama is made from a sturdy, pleated fabric that allows the legs to fold comfortably during sitting meditation. The lightweight kimono jacket features sleeve pockets for small essentials such as a handkerchief, wallet, or keys. Together, the robes create a relaxed, structured fit that supports ease of movement. We offer both traditional and Velcro ties for those who prefer a faster, more accessible closure. Robes are made of sturdy poly-cotton poplin and twill that will hold its color for a long time.
Because we cut and sew each set ourselves, we are able to offer custom-sized lay robes for practitioners who need a more tailored fit. If your size is not listed, we can create a robe set that matches your measurements.

Lay Robes FAQ
1. What are lay robes in Zen Buddhism?
Lay robes are simple meditation garments modeled on the informal robes traditionally worn by Japanese Zen monks and nuns.
3. How do lay robes differ from monastic robes?
Lay robes are an informal, simplified version of Japanese Zen monastic attire. They maintain the same functional shape for meditation — wide sleeves, pleated pants, comfortable fit — but are designed for lay practitioners rather than ordained clergy.
4. What size should I choose for my lay robes?
Lay robes are meant to fit loosely. The kimono jacket should wrap comfortably without pulling across the shoulders, and the hakama should allow the legs to fold easily during meditation. You can view our lay robe size chart here. We offer custom sizing if standard measurements don’t suit your body type.
5. What is a kimono, hakama, and collar?
A kimono is a lightweight, wrap-style jacket with wide sleeves and practical sleeve pockets, offering unrestricted movement during meditation.
The Hakama is pleated skirt traditionally worn in Japanese Zen practice; they provide ample room for folding the legs and sitting comfortably.
The collar (eri) is a simple white fabric band worn around the neck and under the kimono, adding a clean, traditional finishing detail to the lay robe set.
