Meditation Benches

We offer three hand-crafted meditation benches: the Nomad Folding Bench, the Center Bench, and the Traditional Bench. Each bench is made by a local woodworker here on Vashon Island, Washington, with quality hardwoods and careful attention to detail. These benches support a stable, comfortable posture for zazen and other seated meditation practices.

A meditation bench is ideal if you sit in the seiza position (kneeling) or if you need more height than a meditation cushion provides. By lifting the hips, the bench reduces pressure on the knees and ankles. It encourages an upright spine and helps the body relax into alignment, which allows the mind to settle more easily.

Meditation Bench Styles

  • Nomad Folding Bench – Portable and practical. Folds flat for travel, retreats, or outdoor practice. Adjustable height provides flexibility.

  • Center Bench – A raised, straight profile. Perfect for long meditation sessions in a hall or communal space.

  • Traditional Bench – A classic design. Simple, durable, and timeless for everyday practice.

We also make bench cushions that attach securely to the Center Bench or Traditional Bench. These cushions add padding and warmth, and they come in a range of colors and fabrics. Easy to attach, remove, and clean. We recently added a sleek carrying bag for our Nomad Bench, available in a variety of beautiful, subdued colors.

Every bench and cushion is produced locally with care. The result is functional, durable, and elegant support for your meditation practice. For additional guidance, see the FAQ below and visit our blog for in-depth articles.

Frequently Asked Questions about Meditation Benches

1. What is a meditation bench used for?
A meditation bench supports the seiza or kneeling position. It lifts the hips, relieves knee and ankle pressure, and helps you sit with an upright spine.

2. Which is right for me: a meditation cushion or bench?
Benches work best for those who prefer kneeling or who find cross-legged postures difficult. Cushions, such as zafus and zabutons, are better for cross-legged sitting. Many meditators try both before choosing.

3. Are meditation benches portable?
Yes – some. The Nomad Folding Bench is designed for travel and retreats. It folds flat and fits easily in a bag.

4. Do I need a bench cushion?
A cushion is optional. It adds comfort and warmth, especially during long meditation sessions. Our cushions attach securely to the Center or Traditional bench.

5. How do I choose the right meditation bench?
Consider your height, flexibility, and practice style. If you want portability, choose the Nomad Folding Bench. If you need a solid seat for daily use, pick the Center or Traditional bench.
