Description
We’re delighted to offer these whimsical Wabi-Sabi Daruma statues, handmade by artist Alex Echevarria of Wabi-Sabi Studios on Vashon Island. Cast in cement and finished by hand, each piece reflects the wabi-sabi philosophy that shapes all of Alex’s work — an appreciation for the imperfect, the weathered, and the natural, rather than anything polished or uniform.
Daruma is the Japanese name for Bodhidharma, the legendary figure credited with bringing Chan Buddhism — the forerunner of Zen — from India to China. In Japan, Daruma has taken on a life of its own in folklore, most famously in the round, weighted Daruma dolls that symbolize perseverance and resilience. These statues draw on that same spirit, rendered with Alex’s distinctive, lighthearted touch.
Each Daruma is weather-resistant and sturdy, suited to outdoor placement in a garden or on a porch, as well as indoors. For best color retention over time, we recommend keeping them covered or sheltered from direct, constant weather exposure — though many people enjoy the way the finish naturally weathers and softens outdoors, in keeping with the wabi-sabi spirit of the piece itself.
Available in two sizes, each with its own distinct character and proportions.

FAQ’s
What is a Daruma, and what does it represent?
Daruma is the Japanese name for Bodhidharma, the figure traditionally credited with bringing Chan Buddhism — the precursor to Zen — from India to China. In Japanese folklore, Daruma has come to symbolize perseverance and resilience, most famously through the round Daruma dolls used to mark personal goals and intentions.
Who makes these statues?
They’re handmade by Alex Echevarria of Wabi-Sabi Studios on Vashon Island, a local artist who also creates our Wabi-Sabi Jizo Statues and Beach Brick Daruma series. Alex’s process is intuitive rather than rigidly planned — each piece carries its own individual character.
What does “wabi-sabi” mean, and how does it relate to these statues?
Wabi-sabi is a Japanese philosophy that finds beauty in imperfection, asymmetry, and the natural effects of time and weathering. These Daruma statues embody that spirit — each one is unique, with a handmade, slightly irregular quality rather than a uniform, mass-produced look.
What are the statues made from?
Cement, hand-finished by the artist. They’re sturdy and weather-resistant, suitable for both indoor and outdoor display.
Can I keep this outside?
Yes, these statues are made for outdoor placement — a garden or porch are both common spots. For best color retention over time, we recommend keeping them covered or sheltered from constant direct weather. That said, many people enjoy how the finish weathers and softens outdoors, which fits naturally with the wabi-sabi philosophy behind the piece.
What sizes are available, and how do they differ?
We offer two sizes: a taller, more upright Daruma at 8.5″ tall, 5″; wide, and 5″; deep, weighing about 8lbs, and a shorter, wider Daruma at 8.5″ tall, 6″; wide, and 7″; deep, weighing about 9 lbs. Each has its own distinct proportions and presence rather than simply being a scaled version of the other.
