A Story Behind the Straw Hat
In Japanese folklore, the story of Kasa Jizo tells of a poor elderly couple living in a snowy mountain village. On New Year’s Eve, the old man sets out to sell straw hats so they can buy food. None sell. He begins the long walk home through a growing blizzard.
Along the road, he notices stone Jizo statues buried in snow. Moved by compassion, he clears the snow from their heads and places his unsold straw hats on them. For the last Jizo, he gives his own hat.
When he returns home cold and empty-handed, his wife listens and says simply, “You did a good thing.”
That night, they awaken to find rice, vegetables, and fish piled outside their door. In the distance, they glimpse six Jizo figures walking away through the snow, each wearing a straw hat.
The story reminds us that small, uncalculated acts of kindness often return in unexpected ways.
