Description
Our Kyoto Collection Zafu features four delightful Japanese fabrics. All meditation cushions in our Kyoto Collection are deluxe, and come with removable covers and inner cotton muslin covered cushions. You can choose buckwheat or kapok filling and from three special 100% cotton fabrics: Zen Waves, Japanese Maple, Midnight Surf, and Kyoto Night.
All our zafus are double-stitched for extra strength, made from durable 100% cotton duck shell and come with a carrying handle.
Our buckwheat zafu is loosely packed so it will mold to your form.
We stuff our kapok zafu tight to make it soft yet firm to sit on. This zafu has an opening that allows you to adjust the fill to your preference.
Kyoto Collection meditation cushions are also available as cushion sets with regular or thick zabutons and as individual zabutons. See the whole Kyoto Collection here.

FAQs – Kyoto Collection Zafu
What is the Kyoto Collection Zafu?
The Kyoto Collection Zafu is a deluxe version of our traditional round meditation cushion, made with distinctive Japanese-inspired fabrics and a removable, washable cover. It combines the same reliable support of a classic zafu with a more refined, aesthetic presence.
What makes the Kyoto Collection different from your standard round zafu?
All Kyoto Collection zafus are Deluxe by default, meaning they include:
- A removable outer cover
- An inner cotton muslin liner
- Carefully selected Japanese-style fabrics
It’s the same trusted form, with added ease of care and visual beauty.
What fabric options are available in the Kyoto Collection?
The Kyoto Collection features four 100% cotton fabrics:
- Zen Waves
- Japanese Maple
- Midnight Surf
- Kyoto Night
Each brings a different tone—from calm and understated to rich and expressive.
Can I remove and wash the cover?
Yes. All Kyoto Collection zafus include a removable, washable cover, making them easy to care for and maintain over time.
What is the difference between buckwheat and kapok filling?
- Buckwheat hulls: Firm, moldable, and supportive. Heavier and more grounded.
- Kapok: Lightweight, soft yet firm, with a buoyant feel.
Which filling should I choose—buckwheat or kapok?
Choose buckwheat if you want a cushion that conforms closely to your body and stays in place. Choose kapok if you prefer a lighter cushion with a softer, springier feel.
Can I adjust the firmness of the Kyoto Zafu?
Yes. The inner cushion has an opening that allows you to add or remove filling, so you can adjust the height and firmness to your preference.
How large is the Kyoto Collection Zafu?
- Kapok: Approx. 14″ diameter, 8.5″ height, 2.5 lbs
- Buckwheat: Approx. 16″ diameter, 5.5″ height, 5.5 lbs
These dimensions reflect the natural differences between the two fillings.
Is this a good zafu for beginners?
Yes. The Kyoto Collection Zafu offers the same stable, supportive seat as our standard round zafu, making it a great choice for both beginners and experienced practitioners.
Will this cushion help with posture?
Yes. Like all zafus, it raises your hips above your knees, allowing your spine to align naturally and comfortably during meditation.
Can I use this zafu with a zabuton?
Yes. The zafu is typically paired with a zabuton mat, which cushions the knees and ankles while the zafu supports the hips.
Are Kyoto Collection cushions available as a set?
Yes. The Kyoto Collection is also available as coordinated cushion sets, including zafus and zabutons (in standard or thick options), allowing you to create a unified meditation space.
Is this zafu portable?
Yes. Like all our zafus, it includes a carrying handle for easy movement between rooms or to take along to retreats or group sittings.
How do I choose between the Kyoto Zafu and the standard round zafu?
Choose the Kyoto Collection if you’d like a removable cover and distinctive fabric design. Choose the standard round zafu if you prefer a simpler look or a lower price point. Functionally, they offer the same core support.

Perfect level of firmness for proper zen posture. The design is beautiful, and shipping was super fast.
Beautiful, comfortable, well-made. Thank you!
Good quality and easy to wash, and we are “still sitting” on it.
This is exactly the cushion I needed, and the pattern is beautiful, too!
It’s beautiful and well made but, unfortunately, I had to return it because it wasn’t tall enough for me. I’m elderly and need as much zafu height as possible to put my legs in the half lotus position.
