Inkin Bell: We love this bell. Made by Teido Bill Stephens, a monk friend of ours living in Virginia, it is the only American made inkin bell that we know of. It combines a Japanese bell and rosewood striker with American grown black walnut handle and Shaker simplicity. The striker slides into the handle when the bell is at rest. The 2.5” bell has a clear, lasting tone.
An inkin bell is used to begin and end Zen meditation sittings.
Clappers: Crafted by Teido Bill Stephens from black locust wood grown in the mountains around Charlottesville, Virginia, these clappers rest easily in the hand, and are heavy enough to produce a strong, clear clap!
Together with the inkin bell the clappers are used to signal rest and walking periods during meditation. At a Zen monastery they are used in various ways, including to begin and end silent meals and to call everybody to the meditation hall. |
