Inkin Bell: We love this bell. Made by Teido Bill Stephens, a monk friend of ours living in Virginia, it is the only American made inkin bell that we know of.
The brass bell, ipe wood striker, and black walnut handle combine in Shaker simplicity, with the striker fitting elegantly into the handle when the bell is at rest. The 2.7” bell has a clear, lasting tone. Each inkin is individually hand crafted and unique.
An inkin bell is used to begin and end Zen meditation sittings.
Clappers: Crafted by Teido Bill Stephens from black locust wood grown in the mountains around Charlottesville, Virginia, these clappers rest easily in the hand, and are heavy enough to produce a strong, clear clap!
Together with the inkin bell the clappers are used to signal rest and walking periods during meditation. At a Zen monastery they are used in various ways, including to begin and end silent meals and to call everybody to the meditation hall.
