Buckwheat is thought to have originated in China. It was grown extensively in the the US in the 1800s. In the late 1800s it was grown on a million acres, and today on about 70,000 acres.

Buckwheat is not a wheat at all, but actually a fruit (fagopyrum esculentum) related to rhubarb.

Our buckwheat is grown in Eastern Washington.
